This is a slightly different type of lunch bits edition for me.  I felt like eating alone in my company’s cafeteria, but still let myself be connected via Twitter and Yahoo IM.  It was a warm sunny day outside, when I learned about:

  • @thinkgeek was holding a contest for the geekiest childhood memories, on Twitter.  I submitted mine, but I’m not sure if it was geekier than some of the ones submitted.  There were some good (funny) ones.
  • @periapex was trying to explain Twitter to his wife.  I don’t know how my wife is going to react to Twitter.  At least she understood why I blog and being on Facebook.  So I guess it’s time to explain why I just sit here and send out “status updates” to people I barely know.
  • Twitterank may not be a phishing expedition after all.  Others are also starting to agree, including Mashable who wrote about it being a scam in the first place.   But, just in case, I changed my Twitter password anyway!
  • Network outage in the office.  Here, the Sysadmins joke that a person was dumb enough to pull the proverbial plug.  However, in the past, it has happened exactly that way in the data center: Someone did pull the wrong power plug, shutting down routers and switches.
  • My persistence with coffee.  It gives me the jitters, yet I still subject myself to McDonald’s Caramel Ice Coffee.  I may have been brainwashed by their advertising.
  • Being in a laptop computer industry, I found Wi-Fi to be essential!  I had admitted in the past that I won’t be able to survive anywhere without an Internet connection.  Now I can add Wi-fi as a must have survival equipment (though I will take 3G network as a good substitute).

Even though my wife doesn’t fully understand the lure of Twitter (and I would probably be using it less if I hadn’t found a way to sync my Twitter status with facebook’s), she still prefers me using Twitter to when I used to be more active with Entrecard.

All that Entrecard dropping really did use up a lot of time. Especially on dialup.

    Hey Peri,

I’m surprised you still have/use Entrecard. Most of its savvier users are starting to spill over to Twitter, anyway.

Speaking of Facebook status, I think I’ll need to reserve a spot on the sidebar for updates, via RSS, like what you did on your site.

  3. Periapex says:

Yeah, I kinda feel guilty dropping it because of all the buddies I made through it. I’m getting closer and closer to dropping it though as Entrecard continues to “force” us to incorporate more and more code into our blogs in order for members to have incentive to visit. Traffic has never been meaningful and it just doesn’t make sense for me to try to encourage it.

Twitter definitely creates more interactive traffic.

Re: facebook status. You mean my friend’s status’? I took that off a while ago because I was worried about my friends’ privacy. I felt uncomfortable assuming that they would be ok sharing their status to the world…

I think you’re right about the Facebook status thing. I don’t have any problem letting my updates known because it’s suppose to be public knowledge anyway. But others might. I guess I have to restrict it to an RSS feed, if possible.

I don’t want all my twitter updates going on facebook because I don’t want certain people on facebook going and reading my blog. It was fine and dandy when I could filter my messages but since they made some changes or whatever and I haven’t been able to filter my twitterfeed I had to nix it.

Re: Coffee – you must be. I only drink 3 types of coffee: 1) Vanilla (or Hazelnut when its available, like it is now) Latte from Starbucks, 2) Roll up the Rim to win Tim Hortons (I don’t buy timmy’s any other time) and 3) Free coffee from work when I’m falling asleep at my desk.

Rudy: Well facebook statuses are only available to friends, so they aren’t necessarily meant for public consumption the way twitter statuses are.

Fragile: When there’s someone on my facebook friend list that I am not comfortable sharing statuses with, I unfriend them or limit-profile them. Just did that to a few…Otherwise facebook becomes less enjoyable to me.

I gotta do that limit-profile thing on Facebook. I didn’t know that’s possible. There are some folks that I hardly know trying to befriend me.
