I was one of those people who were skeptical about the future of hydrogen powered cars.  It’s mostly due to the many empty promises from the big automakers like Daimler-Chrysler or Ford to deliver one to the mass market.  The research (red tape?) took so long.  I was convinced the hydrogen cars would never going to be consumer ready.

Then Honda delivered the Honda FCX Clarity.  It’s the first consumer available (albeit lease only) hydrogen powered car.  It has a range of about 280 miles per full tank (4 kilograms) of liquid hydrogen.  It can do 136 HP, which is a decent power for a family sedan.  In the US Market, it’s currently only available in California.  People in Orange County are already starting to get the FCX Clarity, and Honda is expecting to lease 200 of them in the next 3 years.  From the looks of it, demand is pretty low because of the lack of hydrogen fueling stations.  But I really commend Honda for trying, wholeheartedly, to get the mass adoption started.   Honda has a history of making alternative power-train cars more appealing by making them available first to the mass market.  They did it with the Hybrid (Insight) and Natural Gas (Civic GX).

Honda really knows exactly how to deliver. That’s why I only buy their cars.

  1. hey Rudy,
I too am skeptical about hydrogen cars, but I value your opinion so I’m glad to hear it. I don’t see how to overcome the lack of hydrogen filling stations, or how to get them. Regarding the car itself, I’m not surprised it’s a Honda… if anyone can do it, they can do. I’m stunned at the horsepower and more importantly the RANGE that they have. I never would have guessed. Hey Steve,

I’m one of those people who doesn’t have faith in big corporation or government when they promise something that benefit the people. There are over 45 hydrogen car prototypes from various companies – only 1 made it to market. That’s just way too slow for something we need RIGHT NOW.

Cant wait for hydrogen cars to become mainstream, but 1 out of 45 is really really slow. Companies need to pick up faster and start listening to the consumer

    Hey,

lots of fuss about Hydrogen Cars in 2008 (only then?) but nothing ever came of it…

no, we, the citizens have to do something, don’t wait for corparate greed to do something positive

All you need to break free from the Energy Grid, greed and coming price explosion.

    Hydrogen Car

Btw: Using (rotten) wood for generating energy is the exactly same method already used in Neanderthal. Last time I checked they were gone…

  6. Building your own homemade hydrogen car need not be a daunting task
is exactly what many car owners have found out. With the right set of plans and instructions, you too can build your own hydrogen car to save money on gas.
