My wife, kid, and I are pretty much the only ones in our family living in California. The rest of our families and friends are scattered in other States, Canada, and overseas. With current technology of E-mail or Instant Messaging, communication should be a breeze. Study shows we’re more connected than ever. My household is in the “well connected” category since we have broadband Internet connection, use Instant & Text Messaging, send and receive E-mails daily, run a blog, and have a Facebook account. But we find it difficult to stay in touch via the Internet. So, we go back to basics. We rely on face-to-face meetings and telephone calls to stay in touch. Why is that?
The answer is simply with the folks we’ve been communicating with. Our parents are not the biggest tech fan, although my Dad does occasionally use the Blackberry and E-mail. My siblings use Instant Messaging, but they’re not always online (and talking). Some of my old friends are on the Internet (and tech savvy), but we no longer have anything in common since we’re living worlds apart (Yes, even Canada is that far away)!
I discovered if we have something to share, we’ll find a way to communicate, right away. Technology is useless without people using it. We still need the topic of conversation and willingness to take time to really talk. I get good conversations sitting with friends and co-workers during lunch time. Heck, we even have interesting talks in the car, while driving wherever. I don’t need a Blackberry. I don’t need to pick up my e-mail every 10 minutes. I just need people who are willing to be less superficial, and share a chunk of time to talk (and listen).
I just need to get out there and be connected. Technology has nothing to do with it.

I think you said it all when you said, “Technology is useless without people using it.” I could say I’m one of the most conflicted fans of technology because I love it but I hate it at the same time. It has made me lazy and dependent, but I’m not so sure I’m ready to live without it. I’m sure I am capable of living without it though.
Hi Reggy,
I see where you’re most conflicted. 😉
Seriously though, the younger generation has no problems what-so-ever with technology. They incorporate it to their daily lives with open arms and ease.
As for me, I’m just in denial about my age and use technology as an excuse to stay young. 🙂
Are you lonely or something?

Hey Peri,
Yup, it’s just me, myself, and I.
Joking aside, being away from family and my old friends can sometimes make us feel lonely. Don’t get me wrong, we made new friends here. We are still trying to stay in touch with everyone, even if they seem so distant. Trying is half the battle.
It is really difficult to stay in touch… I don’t believe in the bullshit that people tell you, ‘If they don’t keep in touch, they don’t want to.’
It simply isn’t true. I’m a lazy creature, so I’ll keep in touch with you guys (my online blogger friends) more than I will my ‘real life’ friends because I can sit at the computer all day and type away at you. If my friends responded to my emails and texts I would be better at keeping in touch.
But they not, so I don’t call or visit like I should. But it doesn’t mean that I don’t want to and I apply the same logic to anyone else – just because they haven’t called me doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t want to hear from me…
What was my point again? Oh yeah, I agree with you Rudy: Trying is half the battle! lol
