We went to Panera Bread.  It was an overcast day when we talked about:

  • Co-worker looks like Rick Yune.
  • Kobe Bryant is the 2008 MVP for Lakers.  But is he to blame for Laker’s loss to the Celtics?  Our opinions were split evenly.
  • Co-worker still haven’t seen Casino Royale with Daniel Craig.  Darker, much less campy James Bond movie.  Much like the new Batman series with Christian Bale.
  • Hands Free Phone law starting July 1 2008 in California.  Are the cops going to enforce it the same way they enforce speeding?  Will they start pulling people over if they see people not using hands-free?  Popular opinion is they will treat it like a seat belt law – they won’t charge you with it, unless you got pull over for some other moving violation.

    [Update: There is a FAQ (thanks LK!) for the hands-free cell phone law stating:
    Q: Can I be pulled over by a law enforcement officer for using my handheld wireless telephone?
    A: YES. A law enforcement officer can pull you over just for this infraction.

    I love your lunch bits!

    We are supposed to be hand free on cell phones here in Chicago and I don’t think it is enforced at all. Seems really hard to do actually.

    Hi Rachel,

    Thanks for the compliments. We talked about a lot of stuff during our lunches. It’s getting more a challenge for me to remember the details now. I must be getting old. 😉

    The cell phone law should be strictly enforced. Just today I saw a guy who tried to merge from the shoulder on a major highway, while his left hand was holding the cell phone to his ear. He didn’t even bother giving the turn signal. That sort of behavior is the reason why such law is in place. People just don’t have the common sense, so the government has to beat them over the head for it.

    panera bread is a great place to have an interesting conversation 😛 but , the phone law hasn’t really been emphasized here in PA , although i here talk of it. It’s an important law though … think of all the accidents caused by those who are too busy taking and immersed in the conversation to pay attention to the road!

    How do you remember these conversations? Do you write them down or something?

    @coral:
    The restaurant is not the reason for interesting conversation. It’s the people that I hang out with. They’re quite knowledgeable and have plenty of stories to tell.

    @Reggy:
    I don’t write them down. I try to remember them as much as I can. When I get back to my desk at work, I quickly enter them into my tumblr site with rough notes. Then I take a day or two to research the topics and make the appropriate edits into this blog.

    I’m thinking my next step is to get a small voice recorder and record the conversation. That might be borderline creepy and invasion of privacy.

    Maybe a little bit, but so long as you let the other person know you’re doing it… it’s not so bad?

    Heh.. If I tell them I’m recording it, they may not say anything genuine. It’s like a reality show thing: when the camera is on, they’ll act out in front of it.

  8. fragileheart says:

    True enough. At least tell them afterwards that you were recording it then!
