We went to Red Robins last wednesday. It was a warm sunny day when we talked about:
- The Toshiba HD-A3 is now down to $129 at Amazon. Pretty good deal for anyone who wants to buy an great 1080p upconverting DVD player with HD capabilities.
- Why Toshiba failed to market HD-DVD properly. They’re not as aggressive as Sony. Sony went all out to ensure their stuff is displayed in front of the store. One of us saw an entire section devoted for Blu-ray viewing, complete with couch and dark room at a local Best Buy. I saw Blu-ray demo with Night at the Museum and Harry Potter 5 being shown on a glorious 3D-like 120Hz Samsung LCD TV. Alas, the Toshiba HD-DVD are relegated to the side, shown on a regular Toshiba Regza LCD. It also doesn’t help the vendor’s sales folks don’t actively promote the Toshiba products either.
- Take the Amtrak train for a tour of California.

yo rudi, wow. you’re a celebrity. I just got a 1080i visio 50″, do you think i should get and HD-DVD ? will the picture be that much better ? Sounds like you’ve really done your homework.
It finally stopped raining a week ago.. loving this weather.. how is it down there in Disney ville ?
Hi Richard, thanks for stopping by! I’m hardly a celebrity. Just trying to build a helpful online community and be social. Sort of what we’re doing on Facebook, but with new people.
Weather here is getting warmer and sunny for the past week. I’m going to Florida next week, so hopefully the weather there is nice too!
HD-DVD will always make things look a lot better. If you want to buy into HD movies right now, I can suggest the HD-DVD player because it’s dirt cheap and high quality. But be warned there’s a chance Sony’s blu-ray will be the new standard for HD because of movie studios’ support. However, blu-ray players are not cheap ($300+ still) and their standards are still not finalized.
So if you want HD now, get HD-DVD. If you can wait for another year or two, get the blu-ray then.
