Have you ever worked in front of an LCD screen and get a bad case of eye strain (feeling dry or red eye), headaches, and sometimes compounded with pain on your arm, wrist, and back? I work with computers all day. I get these symptoms, even though I have a good 20 Inch WideScreen LCD Monitor, ergonomics table, and Herman Miller chair. I always attribute it to just fatigue. It may be Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).
Some product, like this Logitech stand, claims that it reduces fatigue if the monitor is at eye level. However, there’s a research into CVS reveals the most important thing is the way we view our monitors:
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show that most important factor leading to the syndrome is the angle of gaze at the computer monitor. Pain in computer users is diminished when gazing downwards at angles of 14 degrees or more.
So no amount of gadget can help if I don’t have the proper monitor downward viewing angle, fix my posture, and blink my eyes.
Also, the research said, “… CVS remains an under estimated and poorly understood issue at the workplace.” Not many people that I know are aware of it. Fortunately, my optometrist said this problem is fixable, as written in their newsletter article. CVS is now less scary than I previously thought.
gahh i hope this isnt true. i spend many an hour in front of my computer screen.
I spend many hours in front of my laptop too. Sometimes, I get into that “mode” when I can’t take my eyes off my screen. Just have to make sure to take many breaks away from the screen.
